2019-10-17 · The first day was going to be the hardest day, hiking 11 miles in high elevation, starting at 13,451 ft. with a crossing of Salkantay Pass at 15,157 ft. (Basically, at 12,000 feet, every breath you take brings in only 2/3 the amount of oxygen that you would suck in at sea level, and every 1000 feet you climb, you lose about 3% of the available oxygen.)

16 hours later, we were picked up in a van and off to our first trek: The Salkantay Trek. Salkantay Pass (15,213') is the highest point of our trek. Once we crest it we'll start heading down and in fact Wayra Lodge (our destination today) is about the the same elevation as Salkantay Lodge. This is the day where we will join to the classic Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu and we will see hikers going in the same direction as we are. After breakfast we are going to hike for 3 hours uphill to the highest point of the regular Salkantay trek, the Salkantay pass (4,650 m / 15,252 ft). The Salkantay Glacier Lake Trek is the perfect way to spend an entire day trekking through the beautiful Andes Mountains! The trail follows the same route as the famed Salkantay Trek (an alternate Inca Trail).

Salkantay Pass is at an elevation of about 15,000 feet, and at that altitude most people will feel the elevation gain and altitude sickness is possible for lowlanders. Once over the pass, the route is generally downhill but sections can be steep, rocky, and muddy depending on the time of year. Despite the high altitude (4,650m at Salkantay Pass), I feel pretty normal and am able to power up the mountain at a reasonable pace— but dad and Eileen (who literally had 16hrs to acclimatise in Cusco before we started the trek) are experiencing some minor headaches and shortness of breath this morning. The first day going over Salkantay Pass was pretty cold, with the daily high in the mid 30’s (F), and the nightly lows in the high single digits. Once we lost elevation, the daily temperatures were in the 60s with the nightly lows in the 30s and 40s. The wet season in the Andes of Peru spans from November to March when the climate is warmest.
